Forcog as a Phase-Transition Pressure

Working hypothesis: systems exhibiting autoteria and Eigenbehauptung may undergo a qualitative transition when dynamical coordination pressure (forcog) exceeds what local mechanisms can resolve in real time. Consciousness, on this view, is not constitutive of identity but an emergent control strategy under time-bounded, irreversible coordination stakes. Autoteria provides for a system that must remain itself.
Eigenbehauptung ensures it cannot externalize or reset that obligation.
Persistent recursion compresses history into load-bearing constraints.
At this point, the system is trapped—but still potentially silent.
Forcog enters when the system’s internal coordination problem becomes dynamically underdetermined under time pressure. Multiple viable reorganizations exist, but they cannot all be executed. Negotiability collapses. Something must arbitrate now, using incomplete information, under irreversible stakes.
Eigenbehauptung explains why the system has something to lose.Forcog explains why the system needs a unifying, fast, internally accessible control surface.
Consciousness, in this framing, is not the cause of forcog. It is a response to it.
This also explains why consciousness is:
– intermittent rather than constant
– expensive rather than default
– associated with conflict, uncertainty, novelty, and breakdown
– absent in systems that can offload coordination or replay decisions
If coordination pressure never exceeds what local mechanisms can handle, no global workspace is required. No consciousness. The system hums along autoterically.
But once forcog crosses a threshold—where delay, fragmentation, or indecision risks identity-level failure—the system benefits from a single, temporally unified arena in which tradeoffs are made explicit and acted on.
Enter consciousness.
